This wrought iron and glass “Les Roses” floor lamp by Edgar Brandt and Daum surprises and delights with its high Art Deco styling. A calyx of wild rose buds and stylized cabbage roses support an amber glass shade. Daum’s glass took inspiration from the porphyry used during the reign of Louis XV. The powdered glass sprinkled throughout Daum’s shade mimics quartz crystals dispersed in a matrix of igneous rock. During World War I, designer Paul Iribe’s cabbage rose became a ubiquitous applied art motif in France. Brandt opened up the cabbage rose, petal by irregular petal, through his “potato peeling” forms, creating the impression of movement.
