This exquisite Daum Nancy ‘Coloquinte’ Flacon (perfume bottle) combines a dazzling array of techniques. The body of the vase uses the intercalaire technique, whereby green, yellow ochre and burnt umber powdered glass was sprinkled between glass layers, giving a highly textured finish. The stem utilizes Venetian techniques, whereby canes of light and dark green glass were pulled and twisted into a veined stem. The shape of Daum’s vase was inspired by the Chinese huluping, a gourd-shaped vase full of auspicious meanings, from fertility to immortality and happiness.
