New York’s Tiffany Studios Monumental ‘Peacock’ Vase

This majestic Tiffany Studios peacock vase, in a grand baluster form, displays a mesmerizing pulled-feather design in matte green and iridescent blue luster glass. The feathered ‘eyes’ shimmer with concentric rings of black, sapphire, and luster, echoing the regal splendor of a peacock in full display. Invented by glass chemist George J. Cook in 1895 under Louis Comfort Tiffany’s visionary guidance, peacock glass became a vivid emblem of Tiffany’s artistic fascination. As Art Nouveau pioneer Siegfried Bing noted during Tiffany’s 1899 Grafton Galleries exhibition in London, the peacock motif offered ‘a theme admirably adapted to display his skill in glass blowing.’ After a year of tireless experimentation, Tiffany unveiled a dazzling array of vases, each unique, capturing not only the delicate essence of the peacock feather but also an ethereal, iridescent light that seemed almost supernatural.
